Ground Prep 101

Chicken Coop Under a Lemon Tree

Getting Started: How to Level Your Ground for a Chicken Coop or Greenhouse

Before you start assembling your Roost & Root chicken coop or greenhouse, there’s one important step you don’t want to skip—leveling your ground. A flat, stable base sets you up for a smoother build and a sturdier structure, whether you’re giving your chickens a new home or getting your garden started.

Here’s a quick guide to help you prep your site the right way—plus a couple of handy resources if you want to dig deeper (pun intended).

📍 Step 1: Mark Your Area

First things first—decide where your coop or greenhouse will go. We have a handy blog post with some tips on where to build your chicken coop. Next, you might want to use some string and stakes to outline the area or use some other way to mark your area to be prepped.

💡 Need help with this part? This WikiHow article walks you through how to mark and prepare your space step-by-step.

📏 Step 2: Use a Level to Check for Flatness

Once your area is marked, it’s time to check how level the ground is. A basic 4-foot level works great for this—just lay it on the ground in different directions to spot any high or low spots.

👉 Pro tip: Check both side-to-side and front-to-back. This gives you a more accurate sense of your overall grade.

🪵 Step 3: Rake It Out

Grab a rake and start leveling! Move soil from the high spots into the low ones. This can take a little time (and maybe a podcast or two), but it’s totally worth it for a stable base.

Keep rechecking with your level as you go, but remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect!

📚 Step 4: Learn a Little More (If You Want!)

If you’re curious about terms like square, level, and plumb—or just want to nerd out a little before building—check out this great article from MT Copeland. It’s a solid resource with clear explanations.
