Live life for very long and you pretty quickly figure out that two of your most valuable possessions are your time, and your health. And by health we mean both your body… and your mind. A bit of the back story. Roost & Root was founded in 2013 by my wife and I (and our kids) as Urban Coop Company with the idea of building a better backyard chicken coop than the crappy Chinese coops that were typically available. We became much more sophisticated about how we designed and manufactured what we built over the early years. CAD design and CNC production allowed us to create bigger, more sophisticated coops and highly evolved “kits” that could still be shipped all over the US. We added Greenhouses and Raised Gardens to our product offering to reflect the “Root” in our new Roost & Root brand that we adopted in early 2020. We became known for not only our premium products but also our core commitment to excellent customer service. More than 11 years and more than 10,000 coops and greenhouses later, we realized that what really makes our business so valuable to us and to our customers is that it honors the two most valuable things we all own… our time, and our health. To say that the nutritional worth of an egg has been redeemed by the science of the past several years is a wild understatement. Eggs, especially backyard laid eggs from home flocks, have cemented their place as a nutritional super-food and the cholesterol myth has soundly been dispelled. A freshly laid egg from a backyard chicken flock is the best of the best. And taste buds everywhere agree! I like mine cooked in butter. 😋And as a byproduct of Dyan and I improving our own health, we realized the tremendous worth of organically grown vegetables. That inspired us to make a line of greenhouses that solved many of the issues that other greenhouses on the market did not. This included, among other things, longevity, ventilation and assembly ease. We came to realize over the years that a big part of our success revolved around how we valued our customers time too. Our Smart Kits™ as they have come to be known, value your time (and money) as well. As a lifelong builder of everything from homes, to schools, water-parks, Starbucks and even Super Yachts… inferior materials are a waste of your time and money. Fabulous craftsmanship and cute designs can’t make up for crappy materials. Our Smart Kits™ are smart in some sneaky ways that our competition falls short. Instead of you having to figure out the optimal sizes of everything from egg boxes to depth of soil… or roost bar diameter or snow load… we do that for you. Our designs are beautiful. But best of all they work, and they’re proven. And they’re constantly evolved with feedback of thousands of data points. This saves you time and headache. Nobody uses higher quality materials than we do and nobody crafts those materials into a better made product than Roost & Root. Our products live outside and the choices of materials like stainless steel, cedar, and urethane glues reflect this harsh fact. When you spend your hard earned money on our product and whether you or your contractor assemble our Smart Kits™… you’re not wasting your time or money. Your investment in assembly is enjoyed for many years rather than wearing out in only a couple of seasons. What we sell has to be able to be shipped and there is a balance between the size of our packages and the costs to ship it. Our structures are among the largest most well thought out “kitted” structures that exist. Smart Kits™ value your time by us completing many tasks in our shop that other companies make you or your contractor complete on your Nickle at your site. Even though our products might cost a little more, they’re very complete and a lot of the assembly is done in our shop. Each panel is made as big as it can possibly be and still fit into a truck. This not only makes for bigger structures, it also makes for more efficient shipping and fewer panels for you or your contractor to deal with. Smart Kits™ are also about very detailed instructions empowering you or your contractor to be able to quickly put together what you purchase. Don’t worry if you or they get stuck… management of the company personally takes phone calls to make sure that you’re taken care of all along your purchase journey. We’re not rookies at this. More than a 100 million eggs (mid 2024) have been laid in coops we’ve built in all 50 states. And while we’re newer at the greenhouse business… make no mistake. What we’ve learned building our coops has carried over into our greenhouses and our launch product, the Slant-Roof Greenhouse, has enjoyed rave reviews and will serve as a launchpad for much bigger things to come. Its our vision to expand our Smart Kits™ system to cover other structures too. Large beautiful sheds, pergolas, plant based fencing and animal shelters are perfect “products” that can benefit from our way of building and designing things. Much larger much longer lasting greenhouses are on our drawing tables. We hope to one day make ship-able inhabitable structures that leverage our Smart Kit™ concept.
