Like most people, I make thousands of decisions every day. The older I get, the more they fatigue me. That’s why I wear the same black t-shirt every single day—no decision required. Lately I keep seeing our competitors touting “custom chicken coops,” “custom greenhouses,” and now “custom” ADUs. As someone who’s built large yachts, run a division of a public company, owned a commercial construction company, and the inventor on more than 10 issued patents, I get the appeal of custom work. I really do. But I also understand the power of doing one thing with real excellence.

Since 2013 our team has built more than 10,000 increasingly larger and more sophisticated “structures” of various kinds. “Kitted” structures that could be efficiently shipped. Anywhere. Our customers (or their handyman) have assembled them in backyards across all 50 states with little or no drama. Our customers knew exactly what they were getting. No surprises. Premium materials, no compromises. Shipped to their door… no cranes, no freight terminals, no building movers. On their schedule… no architects, no engineers, no more meetings. Just proven, high-quality structures that ordinary people can assemble themselves if they want… and if not, they could hire just about any handyman and pay to have it done. No specialized skills required. It’s our “no no” policy.

The Backstory…
Founded in Dripping Springs, Texas, Urban Coop Company started with a single chicken coop built by co-founder Montie Twining for his wife, Dyan. That spark of craftsmanship has led to more than a decade of innovation, expanding from coops to a full range of backyard living products. In 2020, we rebranded to Roost & Root to reflect our broader vision: creating spaces where you can relax, entertain, and thrive. Today, our 10,000+ sq. ft. workshop and team of dedicated carpenters build everything from chicken coops and greenhouses to our newest offering, the Abode ADU™—a versatile, prefab solution for modern backyard living.

We’ve spent 1000’s of hours perfecting our instruction manuals to ensure they’re clear, easy to follow, and thorough. Don’t be intimidated by the length of our instructions—it’s designed to guide you step-by-step with confidence. We prefer to over-explain than leave anything unclear, ensuring a smooth, frustration-free assembly experience. If you ever need help, our dedicated assembly support is just a phone call (or text) away. We’ve tested all of our products, and even our largest structures can be assembled with just two people.
