|Water freezes (duh) and in freezing conditions, standard poultry nipples can freeze even if you heat the water. Our Version 3 Freeze Guard Poultry Nipple design has 3 distinct features that help it to not freeze so easily. (1) no water is stored in the body of the device so there is nothing to freeze (2) a copper drink pin extends into heated water to conduct heat and keep water flowing, and (3) the shape of the outer body provides a windbreak for wind-freeze protection. Sold at a reduced price when part of a coop package or bought with an accessory waterer. If you are going to retrofit one of our existing waterers that you own you will have to carefully bore out your existing nipple hole to 5/8 and make sure it has clean edges before installing this product.|

3D Printed Poultry Nipple (Ver 3)
Here’s what you need to know…
- Our version III is 3D Printed from Color Impregnated Glass Infused Nylon. It is highly weatherable, has good UV-stability, and is freeze and waterproof.
- The drink pin is precision machined from high-grade copper for maximum heat conductivity.
- The grommet is made from a high-grade butyl rubber rated for -75° to +250° F temperatures and the O-Ring from Viton synthetic rubber. They will wear out every three years or so though.
- We tested Drinker through 100°F Texas Summers to confirm adequate water delivery to layer hens and had no problems. We have not tested with broilers.
- We freeze tested Drinker with our heated Drinker in a 0° Freezer and it worked. No wind chill. In the 2018 / 2019 winter season, customers overwhelmingly reported freeze resistance down to 0°F but below that, we began to see failures. We made some improvements to Version 3. Your expectation should be that in limited winds, water will flow down to around 0°F but would freeze sub-zero and in the wind chill. We think that it would provide convenience in the 0°F to 32°F range but not stand much of a chance in sub-zero. A heated livestock bowl or heated dog bowl might go lower. The wattage of the heater you install affects performance.
- It is best to buy this Drinker at the time of coop purchase or at the time of an accessory waterer purchase. The grommet that the Drinker uses requires a 5/8 hole which is bigger than the hole that comes in our standard waterer for a standard poultry nipple.
- If you are going to retrofit one of our existing waterers that you own you will have to carefully bore out your existing nipple hole to 5/8 and make sure it has clean edges before installing this product. You can be a little off, but not much. Use silicone lubricant or other lubricants to help seat the grommet after installation by rotating it.
- We do not recommend the use of this product for juvenile & or bantam small breeds as they will have problems pecking hard enough to cause flow.
- Like all poultry nipples… this nipple will leak if dirt and grit are allowed to accumulate around the o-ring seal. Simply rinse out and clean your waterer and it is our experience that the problem will go away.
- It is normal for a poultry nipple to drip “some”. Some is a relative word. If it is dripping too much, it probably is fouled with grit or the o-ring has reached the end of its service life.
- In Version 3 we increased the spring tension to combat dripping. If you don’t think your chickens are getting enough water, you can compress the spring by depressing it completely with your thumb bottoming it out a half dozen times or so. The balance is tight enough not to drip, and loose enough to deliver water. All poultry nipples drip. But if its too excessive, it will begin to build up ice and eventually freeze closed.
Does not heat water. This only addresses the nipple freezing issues common in all industry-standard poultry nipples in 0°F to 32°F conditions. It will begin to not work in sub-zero or sub-zero wind chill conditions.

Instructions For Freeze-Proofing 4″ Waterers…
Coop waterers are shipped with a slotted cap that allows air in as the water goes down. In addition to the slotted cap that we include with the 4" EZ-Fill waterers, you need a heater and we recommend a cord cover. Instructions For Freeze-Proofing Mobile Waterers…
Guidance: Using a thermostatically controlled pipe heater wrap in conjunction with some 2″ foam pipe wrap tape, you can keep the water flowing even in the winter-time. Flip your coop up on its side, wrap and run the cord out the waterer entry hole on the side of the coop. Read instructions carefully. We've tested with a longer section than the instructions call for. I would suggest using as little wattage as needed to keep water from freezing in your locale. The waterer is about 4 feet long inside the coop which is between the 3 and 6 foot models. Pipe wrap is a must. A cord cover where your cord joins is a good idea as is using a GFI protected outlet. Procedure For Adjusting Spring…
If the spring becomes too compressed the unit will can drip too much. If it is extended too much, its difficult for the birds to access water freely. Use this video (no narration) as a guide for adjusting the spring… correct length is exactly to the bottom edge of the o-ring groove. Also, if you have issues with dripping, make sure the plastic area on top of unit is clean and free of any burrs that would interfere with the o-ring seating tightly.
Please note: Only push the pin in far enough to slip the o-ring on when reassembling or you will just be re-compressing the spring too much.
